				<title>Scouts Hedge Laying at Ivel Springs</title>

				<description>&lt;p&gt;The scouts have spent a chilly and slightly damp Sunday helping the Friend of Baldock Green Spaces and the Countryside Management Service at Ivel Springs. They've learnt how to lay a living hedge as well as weaving branches in to hold it into position while it grows and making fence posts. They've completed service hours towards their Community Challenge Badge as well as completing parts of their Forester and Global Conservation Badges.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

				<title>Scouts Green Beret competition 18th - 20th November 2011</title>

				<description>&lt;p&gt;Last weekend (18-20 November) 3 teams of scouts went to the Green Beret competition at Tolmes. This is my third Green Beret and it was my favourite by far as the was NO RAIN (which is a miracle in itself)!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I was in the competing team with Charlie, Jack W, Jack T, Liam and Francesca the team leader. Our team name was zebra (as chosen by me) which probably wasn't the most popular of names but at least it wasn't my first choice, team Tapir. On the saturday we had orienteering first. We got 10 posts out of 15, but had to run back as we only had 5 minutes and we were on the other side of the forest. Then we had to do some day bases (activities scored on teamwork and ability) We then had the assault course which was mostly running and following coloured paper trails but with some challenges as well. The best challenge was the river run where you had to run across the river on floating crates and planks without falling in. Unfotunately is was easier than it looked so no-one fell in. After that we had to do more day bases. My favourite base was where we had buckets of water and we had to fill up jugs with water, run to the pole and fill up the pole to get the ping pong ball. The only catch was there were holes in the jug and the pole. We epically failed and got no where near the top and all &amp;#160;ended up getting soaked.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;After dinner we had night bases which were similar to the day ones but some different ones and no water activities. On Sunday we packed up and there was the awards ceremony. We got our results, 70th out of 134 teams. We came 35th on just the day bases which was also good.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Overall I &amp;#160;had a great time and I will be coming again next year if the weather forecast is good!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;by Ellen&lt;/p&gt;</description>

				<title>Cubs visit to Hendon RAF Museum</title>

				<description>&lt;p&gt;On 20th November, 2011 we left home at 9.30am to go to Hendon Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon for a cub day out. When we got there we saw lots of planes and helicopters. My favourite one was The Lancaster. When we got to the 'Do It Yourself' room we got to sit in the helicopters and do some scientific experiments.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When we got to the next room we saw some 3D movies and we also went on the simulator. The next building was jam packed with planes. Unfortuately we didn't get to go in all of the planes and only got to sit in one cockpit.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;However I had a great day out and would recomend it to all cubs and scouts.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Rebecca&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</description>

				<title>Scouts orienteering &amp;amp; geocaching at Wandlebury</title>

				<description>&lt;p&gt;The orienteering at Wandlebury Woods was good, everybody enjoyed it. There were three groups. Two groups had leaders but the older scouts were allowed to go off by themselves. Every group found nine posts and we all found one geocache box. The geocache was hidden in a log and Jack W found it. Inside the geocache were lots of things, we put in some scout badges and we took out a plastic cow which Ellen and I named Gogmagog after the place we were. He is now going to keep Brecon company! Thanks to the leaders Lesley, Claire and Richard for a great day out.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Francesca&lt;/p&gt;</description>

				<title>Scouts Woodland Conservation</title>

				<description>&lt;p&gt;What better way to spend a chilly but sunny autumn morning! Today we have been up to Weston Woods to help the Friends of Baldock Green Spaces and &amp;#160;The Countryside Management Service clearing an area of woodland to help open up parts of the wood so new species can develop. The scouts cut down and sawed up trees which they then helped lay to form a dead hedge. The dead hedge forms shelter and a safe passageway for smaller animals and insects so they are able to move around safe from predators.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The scouts have been working towards their Forester Badge and some of the skills they have learnt today will be used towards their badge requirements for both this and their Global Conservation Badge. They have also earnt service hours towards their Community Challenge. We're back helping again in a different local area in December when they will be learning other new skills. 				<title>Scouts Born 2B Challenged</title>

				<description>&lt;p&gt;Well done to our B2B team who took part in the annual county camping competition which was held this year at Harmergreen Wood. This was a weekend of back to basics camping, backwoods cooking and challenges. Richard, me and their parents dropped them off with all their kit and equipment on the Friday evening when they were left to manage themselves under scrutiny of the county judges until Sunday lunchtime when leaders and &amp;#160;parents were allowed back on site to pick up their teams.This was our first team to enter for a few years and they did brilliantly.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Brecon&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</description>

				<title>County Cub Night Hike</title>

				<description>&lt;p&gt; I was very pleased to get into the Cyclocross team. We had to go to Well End Scout Centre. I was glad it didn't rain. We had two teams and I was in the A team. The course was through the wood with lots of steep hills and a bridge to cross. It was quite hard the first time round but the second time was easier and I was quicker. It was  really good fun especially when I overtook someone from another team. All our team did really well and had fun. I was very happy when we got our certificate at the end.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Joshua&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</description>

				<title>Scouts DIY Badge</title>

				<description>&lt;p&gt;The scouts have been working towards their DIY badge. As part of this they have soldered pipes, changed fuses, wired plugs and as part of a big project they spent a day replacing and painting all the boards around the outside of HQ. They also learnt how to use a rake! They cleared up all the grounds resulting in two car trips to &amp;#160;the dump plus a skipful of rubbish. 				<title>County Cub Night Hike</title>

				<description>&lt;p&gt;Last night I went on the County Night HIke. In my team was me, Adam, May, Lauren and Jessica. We had Baloo, King Louie and Jamie to help us. We were the second ones back to the school. On the way we had to do lots of challenges like wheelie bin races and a first aid challenge with a car crash. My favourite one of the six challenges was the wheelie bin racing. We went to bed at 12 o'clock on the floor in a classroom at the school where we met. In the morning we had breakfast and got ready to go home. At the end we had a Grand Howl where they gave out certificates and I got a Night Hike badge and my map reader's badge and then we went home. I had lots of fun and I would like to do it again.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Mark&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On 17th September we went to Hobbs Wood Primary School in Hemel Hempstead to start the county night hike. When we got there we unpacked our bags. I was sleeping with Molly, Sophie and Jessica.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Then when we were in our groups the walk began. I was walking with Molly, the birthday girl, Sophie, Joshua, Tom and Jack. Our leaders were Akela and Pete.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The first challenge was fun; we had a 4 by 4 square with 6 cones. Our job was to find the sweets under the cone, using the compass.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The next challenge was to find symbols on 10 maps. We also had an emergency challenge, a wheelie bin challenge, a run up a hill challenge and a mars bar challenge. This was as well as walking the 8 mile course.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We started walking about 6pm and we finished at about 11.30pm. We missed one of the challenges because we got a bit lost!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We got to sleep about 12.30pm. We were all sleeping together in one of the classrooms at the school. We got up at 6am and had breakfast before leaving after the Grand Howl.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I had a cool time on the hike and can't wait to go again next year.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Rebecca&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On Saturday 17th September 2011, we did a night hike in Hemel Hempstead. When I arrived I had to unpack my stuff and put my bed out.  I slept next to Rebecca and Jessica. After we had unpacked our stuff, we went outside to play with the football. Later on we were called to go onto the field with all the other cubs.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Before dinner we got changed, for dinner I had sausages and spaghetti hoops. We had our photo taken in our group, we were 46, I got to hold the number. In our group there was Rebecca, Tom, Sophie, Josh, me and Jack. Leading us we had Akela and Pete.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We got a coach which took us to the field. We arrived at the field. A lady told us which way we were going, we went anti-clockwise (I think). Our first activity we did we had to use a compass. During the night did 5 activities. My favourite challenge was the cookie challenge, because we had to climb a ladder up to a plank of wood and then walk across it. I thought I was going to fall off but I didn't.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When we got back to bed I was asleep quite quickly! In the morning when we woke up, we had to pack our bags ready to go home. Then we had breakfast! We had chocolate cake for breakfast :-) then we went for the grand howl, we all ran up to get our certificates. Then it was time to go home. I enjoyed it lots because I had all my friends there. Thank you for the best birthday ever.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&amp;#160;Molly&amp;#160;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On Saturday I went on the Cubs night hike.  In my team were Cameron, Ryan, and Louis. Our leaders were Mim and Bagheera.  When we got there we had to set up our rooms and had sausages and spaghetti hoops.  Then we got on a coach to take us to our starting point.  We had to walk through some fields, go through a hedge and walk down some roads.  We had lots of challenges, including helping at the scene of a mock car accident, and wheelie bin races.  The best part of the whole trip was that we got lots of sweets to eat!  I had a lot of fun and will definitely go again. 				<title>Cubs Summer Camp 2011, Walesby, Nottinghamshire</title>

				<description>&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;What I enjoyed most&amp;#160;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;by Reece&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;What I enjoyed most about cub camp was the cave maze because we got to go in the dark and some people got scared and some people scared other people! We had to crawl on our knees and find all the exits, We had to start at the top and make our way down to the bottom by either giving directions or holding onto the person in front. There was a really steep drop where you had to go down and then find your way through a tunnel to the exit.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;I also enjoyed the quad biking and I didn't crash once during my turn, although one boy flipped over twice! It was good fun wearing the helmet and goggles just like my grandad does on his motorbike. The shooting was good fun and I climber both walls, the 25ft first and then the 45ft afterwards. I especially liked sitting around the campfire eating marshmallows!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;There was nothing I didn't like about camp (except the rain and the flies) and I hope I can go again next year.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;*****&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Tuesday&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;After waving goodbye to everyone, we left Letchworth at 11am. Akela was driving our minibus and I sat beside Molly. Baloo was driving the other minibus. We stopped at a service station and had lunch, it was hot and there were wasps everywhere.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;When we arrived at Walesby we were told which tent we were in. I was going to be sharing a tent with Olivia, Janika and Rebecca. We unpacked and got our beds ready. We looked around the campsite and played quick cricket and rounders.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Wednesday&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;In the morning we did the aerial assault course, my favourite part was the rope swing. We then made a catapult, afterwards we had lunch and did crate stacking and played mini golf.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Thursday&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;After breakfast we did shooting and archery, I wasn't vary good at shooting. In the afternoon we did kayaking, canoeing and rafting. King Louis pushed us in the water. That evening we had a disco.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Friday&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;I really enjoyed the assault course, before lunch we rode quad bikes. I only crashed 5 times! After lunch we did cave mze and climbed the 25ft wall, climbing the wall was fun.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Saturday&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;In the morning we did team building, I found the activities hard, but I had lots of fun trying to complete the challenges. Before lunch we did fencing, I won my tournament. In the afternoon we climbed the 45ft climbing wall, it was scary at the top. I really enjoyed climbing the wall it was my favourite activity of the camp. We had a camp fire and then had a disco.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Sunday&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;We packed our bags which took longer than expected. I was in Akela's minibus again, this time I sat next to Rebecca. King Louis was also in the minibus. We stopped at a service station. We were sad, tired and happy.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;font size="3"&gt;Sophie&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;*****&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;We met at the scout hut and had a group photo taken.Then we got split into 2 groups and got into the minibuses. I was in Baloo's minibus with King Louis and Jacob. We stopped by Rutland Water but there was loads of wasps so we didn't stay very long. Jamie got stung&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;When we got to Walesby we drove to our pitch. While we waited to find out what tents we were going to be in we decorated our day sacks. Then Akela told us. I was with Ryan, Angus, Cameron, Rhys and Reece. We played rounders and non stop cricket while Baloo and Hawk went to the chip shop to get tea. After tea we went for a walk round the site down to the Lake.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;The next morning we had breakfast and then some of us did aerial challenge while the other half made a giant catapult. Then we swapped over.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;Peter came to visit us.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;In the afternoon we did crate stacking and crazy golf. We had some free time before tea. As it was raining we played cones and dishes in the big marquee.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;On Thursday we did archery and shooting. I hit the centre in archery. In the afternoon we walked to the lake. Bagheera took his van full of cakes for us. We went in the canoes and kayaks. Some of us did raft building. We played 'heads, shoulders, knees and jump' while standing up in the canoes. Some of us jumped in the water when we said 'jump'. It was fun doing these activities. When we got back we all had to get some clean clothes and go to the showers but it took ages for everyone to get their clean stuff together. After tea we went to the disco and then all sat round the clay oven on hale bales. We had hot chocolate and cake.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;On Fridat we went on the quad bikes and did the aerial course. Lots of people crashed into the tyres but I didn't. The aerial course was good fun. I like all of the challenges, especially having to climb over the walls.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;In the afternoon we climbed the 25ft wall and went in the cave maze. Bagheera put Jamie's hat at the top of the wall. My favourite was the cave maze. It was pitch black in there. I remembered which way to go and didn't get lost inside. I helped some cubs that were a bit scared of the dark. In the evening we all looked for some kindling so that Bagheera could light an altar fire. We toasted marshmallows, they were yummy.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;On Saturday Rita and Bob came to see us for the day. My first activity was the 45ft climbing wall. I got to the top and abseiled down in 1 min 25 seconds. After lunch it was our turn to do some team building and fencing. We had to make a Rubiks Cube, move the bomb only using 2 ropes and all walk together using the big skis. Then we did fencing. In the evening there was a big campfire. We made an entrance singing &amp;#160;'1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 we are a little bit crazy' All the activity instructors led the songs It was really funny. Everytime Jamie got it wrong we shouted ' Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, weak' After the campfire there was a disco until 11pm. If you didn't want to go to the disco, Bagheera and Hawk played charades by the fire.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;On Sunday we packed our stuff, had breakfast and drove home. It was an amazing camp with lots of brilliant activities. My favourite activity was the cave maze. 				<title>Scouts Summer Camp 2011. Great Tower campsite, Windermere, Cumbria</title>

				<description>&lt;p&gt;After much discussion and deliberation and months of planning we opted for Great Tower scout campsite on the shores of Lake Windermere, Cumbria for this years summer camp. 16 scouts, one young leader and three leaders crammed themselves, their kit and all the camping equipment for a week away into two minibuses and a trailer and headed off with high expectations. Halfway through the week we were joined by another leader and the DC who couldn't resist the lure of a trip to the Lakes (quite understandable really!) &amp;#160;We all had an amazing time - the site was excellent, the instructors at &amp;#160;Great Tower were fantastic and River Deep, Mountain High Activity Centre who did the sailing, rafting and Gorge walking with us were terrific.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;u&gt;&lt;b&gt;Saturday 30th July - The Journey&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On the way to the Great Tower campsite it was exhausting and tiring. We had to wake up at half past six to get all prepared and ready. We got up to the scout hut at 8am to leave. We had to listen to Richard's rubbish music for 2 hours until we got to the first services. We got sweets and drinks for the 2 hour journey to the next services where we stopped for lunch. We got back on the minibus for another 3 hours to get to the campsite. When we got there we all said it was worth the long journey. We're in this massive forest where we set up tents. The new tents that I put up look small on the outside but big on the inside. So far it's great! &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160; &amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Charlie&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.8thletchworthscoutgroup.org/017 (2) (800x600) (150x113).jpg"/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Sunday 31st July - Ghyll Scrambling&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We set out after lunch to Coniston for ghyll scrambling. Finding the car park was a bit of a challenge. We followed the directions we were given but we thought the car park we ended up in wasn't the right one. We drove back down the road and then eventually phoned the number only to discover we were in the right car park after all! We quickly got into out wetsuits and the shorts they gave us. The shorts were ripped from past ghyll scramblers and everyone was laughing at the tear in Richard's shorts. The water was freezing and everyone was shrieking at the temperature. We started up through the river climbing over rocks and finding the sudden drops in the river bed as we were wading through. we got to a waterfall which was interesting to climb as you couldn't see but we all managed it. At the end we reached a pool and we jumped in from the ledges for a while.We then walked back and everyone was tired. It was fun and different but sooo tiring. Oh well, a good nights sleep for us then,&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.8thletchworthscoutgroup.org/11 08 01 Gorge Walk Church Beck 18 (113x150).jpg"/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;u&gt;&lt;b&gt;Monday 1st August - Rafting&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Today we went rafting on Coniston Water. We were split into three individual teams and we built the rafts that we would be using. It was funny when one instructor tied a knot and then another instructor said it was wrong and re-tied the knot. Once we had built our rafts we set out onto the water to test how strong they were. We had a series of different challenges such as which raft was the strongest and which raft had the bravest crew. Our final challenge was to see who could dismantle their raft the quickest. After all the challenges the overall winners were Lewis, Shaun, Stan, Richard, Charlie and Isaac . Afterwards we had to peel off our wetsuits and we sat down to eat our lunch. It was a very nice lunch but the people who'd asked for chocolate spread were suprised how little chocolate spread they had. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Liam&amp;#160;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.8thletchworthscoutgroup.org/031 (2) (150x113).jpg"/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Monday 1st August - Sailing&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We started off in the morning which was tiring. We had cereal and egg sandwiches. We set off to go rafting in the morning and when we got out of rafting I discovered I had a tick between my fingers!! Once all the trauma of the tick and the removal of our wetsuits was over we set out to the lake to go sailing. When we arrived we met our instructor. He was very eager to get on the water but he didn't seem too eager to learn our names. He led us up to his car to put our buoyancy aids on and even when the instructor explained it to me I still don't see the difference &amp;#160;between a bouyancy aid and a life jacket. They both help you float. Off that subject, when we got on the water the instructor explained to us all the different ropes. When the instructor finally took us off port he slipped off the end of the jetty and onto the water as he was pushing us away! When he got back on the boat we were underway. When we were about halfway through we discovered some Guinness Book of World Records markers. The instructor told us that a guy named Donald Campbell tragically lost his life trying to break the water speed record. When we stopped off at another jetty we had a break for hot chocolate but my team mates only left me about a quarter of a mugful. On the way back we cheated and used the motor to reach the jetty on time. It was a very eventful day but relaxed towards the end.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Lewis&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.8thletchworthscoutgroup.org/056 (150x113).jpg"/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Monday 1st August&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Help me!! I'm trapped in Rachel and Rhian's tent! It's such a mess and I have no way of getting out! I waited forever and ended up falling asleep. I woke up and everyone still wasn't back so I had to find some way of having fun. I read a bit of Rhian's book but I gave up because I forgot my specs! But don't worry I have found the best thing to do to pass the time away. I played dress up with Rachel and Rhian's clothes! It was fun but then I realised I couldn't fold them up after I was done so I just left them. But luckily you couldn't tell the difference! I had a good day but boy was I glad to see everyone. I was getting hungry and so they saved my life when they returned!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Brecon&amp;#160;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;*****&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Tuesday 2nd August - Honister Slate Mine&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The first thing we did on the tour was looking into old miners houses. They were vile as they were dark, wet and smelly. We then went into the really cold mine into the cavern called Rat Trap. It was called this as the loose rock could fall at any time. We walked through a small, tight path where some people had to duck if they were too tall. We got into a big cavern called Fiddlers. The reason that they called it that is that two men used to play their fiddle in there.We Saw a mine shaft that went to the peak of the mountain and some men were working up there and then we went back through fiddlers cavern. We went down the steps and through a tunnel. We got to the cavern which Mark (the person who re-opened the mine) wanted to make into an ampitheatre to remember the people who had worked and died in the mine. Then we left the cavern but before I picked up a bit of slate to take home. We walked out and down to the shop and then we left for Ambleside town for fish and chips and to go shopping.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Jack T&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.8thletchworthscoutgroup.org/053 (150x113).jpg"/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Wednesday 3rd August - Hillwalking&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On Wednesday a group of 8th Letchworth scouts went walking up Old Man Coniston. Those scouts were Jack T, Michael, Liam, Lewis and me, Francesca. The leaders that came with us were young leader Emma, leaders Claire and Goodie. We had good weather and it wasn't too hot (which helped a lot!) and the view was amazing! We didn't quite get to &amp;#160;the summit but we went to the tarn which is quite near the top! When we got to the tarn we took off our boots and socks and went paddling in the water. It was icy cold but felt nice on our hot feet. Jack sat Brecon (our mascot) on a rock and Claire took a photo. I thought the going up was easier than the coming down but Liam thought the exact opposite! All in all it was a good day and we all enjoyed it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Francesca&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.8thletchworthscoutgroup.org/187 (150x113).jpg"/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Wednesday 3rd August - Canoeing&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Canoeing was really strange because we started with all the canoes connected in twos. First we started off with me, Isaac, Richard and William. We went too fast so we had to change the people around. When we got to the other side of the lake we had a stone skimming competition and strangely I won with 9!! When we set back off the instructor told us to walk round the two canoes. When it was Chris K's go he used me to keep his balance and he pushed me off. Plus while I was in the water a leech hitchhiked on the boat by biting my shin. Isaac freaked out. So overall it was a great activity.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Stan&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.8thletchworthscoutgroup.org/075 (2) (150x113).jpg"/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Thursday 4th August - Hillwalking&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The first thing we did when we saw the mountain was say 'can we go back now?' When we started walking it was very steep , it looked vertical. There were two men coming down the hill that told us there was an ice-cream van open at the top of the hill so we got excited. We wanted to get to &amp;#160;the top quickly but we soon found out they were giving us false hopes!! Every time we thought we were at the top we saw another bit to climb. When we finally got to the top Chris K gave Ellen her Chief Scout Gold Award. When we walked down we decided not to go the same way that we had walked up &amp;#160;so we had togo down a river. Then we found out that there wasa footpath right next to us so we had been tripping and slipping all over the place for nothing! It was a tiring day but it was quite interesting.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Elise&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.8thletchworthscoutgroup.org/238 (150x113).jpg"/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Thursday 4th August - Rock Climbing&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The climbing was on the site where we were camping. I'm not exactly sure how tall it was.First of all we had a safety talk, and then we got put into our harnesses and helmets.There were 2 parts to the harness- one bit that you stepped into and the other bit was like a waist coat jacket.The rope attached them together. Then we were ready to climb up the tilted slate wall. We all took turns climbing and belaying for each other.Someone pulled the rope so the belayer didn't have any slack. There was a bucket monkey so the rope didn't get muddy or loosen. Everyone got to where they wanted to get to. Some people slipped and banged against the slate rock. I think it was a really good activity to do as it was different to climbing on normal climbing wall.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Jack T&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.8thletchworthscoutgroup.org/181 (2) (113x150).jpg"/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Friday 5th August - Hillwalking&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The walk up Harrison Stickle, well it was more a hike! It was a hike with an amazing view. After and hour we were almost halfway up &amp;#160;- that tells you how high we were (claire: and how fast they were going! &amp;#160;at least the leaders had had the previous two days to warm up!) &amp;#160;For lunch we got water out the river to make hot chocolate. It was that nice. The path coming down was scary because if we fell we could fall off the mountain and because I'm Stan I had to be the one to fall over!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Stan&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;(this was one of the most rewarding days walking with scouts I have had - the enjoyment of the four scouts made it one to be remembered for a very long time, and just for the record Stan didn't fall off the mountain! - Claire)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.8thletchworthscoutgroup.org/290 (350x77).jpg"/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Friday 5th August - High Ropes&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;There were two sorts of high rope activities we did: the leap of faith and an aerial assault course. First we didi the spine-chilling leap of faith, as we were putting our harnesses on the instructor taught us how to belay (pay attention!) When it was my go we strapped Brecon (our scout mascot) to my back. To reach the platform we were to jump off, we had to climb a ladder then use metal rungs sticking out of the tree. When you got to the platform (as high as a house) you made a mighty leap and gripped hold of a hanging bar about two metres away. Overall Brecon was the most scared and he was relieved not having to do the aerial assault course. The aerial assault course consisted of a plank of wood to start with, followed by another. We had to scramble over these. On top of that was a beam sticking up vertically with rungs on the side to hold onto; next was a scramble net, and finally two tyres. Two people took part at a time, and we raced against each other - I won mine easily!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I don't mind heights too much but some people weren't so keen. This was one of the best things I have done in Scouts. It was really good for overcoming fears and developing confidence.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;William&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.8thletchworthscoutgroup.org/124 (113x150).jpg"/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Saturday 6th August - The End of Summer Camp 2011&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We woke up early today. The leaders had got us to pack out bags last night and some of the biggest scouts had helped Goodie load them onto one of the minibuses while I had sat and supervised the other scouts making all the packed lunched for the journey. (I have to watch these things you closely you know as the duty patrol had been a bit 'careful' with the chocolate spread earlier in the week and I like mine thick!)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We had breakfast outside as the mess tent was already packed away and all got our tents down quickly (I was supervising again - it's a tough job but someone has to do it!) because the leaders said there was a lot of rain heading our way. We finished loading the trailer and at 8.00am both minibuses pulled away from Great Tower Scout Camp and straight into a massive storm with awesome lightening strikes over the Yorkshire Dales. It had been a brilliant week, new activities to try and a chance to get better at the things we'd done before. All the scouts and leaders had worked really hard together (an amazing team!) and everyone was tired but buzzing. Before we left Lesley gave us all our Great Tower Badge and Richard presented us with our Service Stations Away Badges (I'm up to 10 - they only count if you're in scout uniform - I think it's a brilliant badge and we're the first troop in the country to get them, we're waiting for Gilwell to endorse them.)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We had a long journey home (but not as long as on the way up here - at least there were no traffic jams) and it was great to see our families again. 				<title>District Cubs Bell Boating Sunday 10th July 2011</title>

				<description>&lt;p&gt;We arrived at 9.30am and left at 3pm. I thought 3pm was too soon really as I was having so much fun !&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Our team was myself, Mae, Adam, Adam , Molly, Richard, Shaun, Jack, Ryan,Stanley, Angus, Tristan and Karen.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We were competing against 1st Baldock, 5th Letchworth, 12th Letchworth and 7th Letchworth.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We had lots of fun and tried very hard, but unfortunately we lost all of our races and came last overall !&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We had to race again against 5th Letchworth because a sail boat got in our way and the race had to be stopped.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The overall winners were 5th Letchworth.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;After all the races had finished there was a parents versus leaders race.
