County Cub Night Hike

Posted by 8thletchworthscoutgroup on September 18, 2011 at 10:50 AM

Last night I went on the County Night HIke. In my team was me, Adam, May, Lauren and Jessica. We had Baloo, King Louie and Jamie to help us. We were the second ones back to the school. On the way we had to do lots of challenges like wheelie bin races and a first aid challenge with a car crash. My favourite one of the six challenges was the wheelie bin racing. We went to bed at 12 o'clock on the floor in a classroom at the school where we met. In the morning we had breakfast and got ready to go home. At the end we had a Grand Howl where they gave out certificates and I got a Night Hike badge and my map reader's badge and then we went home. I had lots of fun and I would like to do it again.

On 17th September we went to Hobbs Wood Primary School in Hemel Hempstead to start the county night hike. When we got there we unpacked our bags. I was sleeping with Molly, Sophie and Jessica.

Then when we were in our groups the walk began. I was walking with Molly, the birthday girl, Sophie, Joshua, Tom and Jack. Our leaders were Akela and Pete.

The first challenge was fun; we had a 4 by 4 square with 6 cones. Our job was to find the sweets under the cone, using the compass.

The next challenge was to find symbols on 10 maps. We also had an emergency challenge, a wheelie bin challenge, a run up a hill challenge and a mars bar challenge. This was as well as walking the 8 mile course.

We started walking about 6pm and we finished at about 11.30pm. We missed one of the challenges because we got a bit lost!

We got to sleep about 12.30pm. We were all sleeping together in one of the classrooms at the school. We got up at 6am and had breakfast before leaving after the Grand Howl.

I had a cool time on the hike and can't wait to go again next year.

On Saturday 17th September 2011, we did a night hike in Hemel Hempstead. When I arrived I had to unpack my stuff and put my bed out. I slept next to Rebecca and Jessica. After we had unpacked our stuff, we went outside to play with the football. Later on we were called to go onto the field with all the other cubs.

Before dinner we got changed, for dinner I had sausages and spaghetti hoops. We had our photo taken in our group, we were 46, I got to hold the number. In our group there was Rebecca, Tom, Sophie, Josh, me and Jack. Leading us we had Akela and Pete.

We got a coach which took us to the field. We arrived at the field. A lady told us which way we were going, we went anti-clockwise (I think). Our first activity we did we had to use a compass. During the night did 5 activities. My favourite challenge was the cookie challenge, because we had to climb a ladder up to a plank of wood and then walk across it. I thought I was going to fall off but I didn't.

When we got back to bed I was asleep quite quickly! In the morning when we woke up, we had to pack our bags ready to go home. Then we had breakfast! We had chocolate cake for breakfast :-) then we went for the grand howl, we all ran up to get our certificates. Then it was time to go home. I enjoyed it lots because I had all my friends there. Thank you for the best birthday ever.

On Saturday I went on the Cubs night hike. In my team were Cameron, Ryan, and Louis. Our leaders were Mim and Bagheera. When we got there we had to set up our rooms and had sausages and spaghetti hoops. Then we got on a coach to take us to our starting point. We had to walk through some fields, go through a hedge and walk down some roads. We had lots of challenges, including helping at the scene of a mock car accident, and wheelie bin races. The best part of the whole trip was that we got lots of sweets to eat! I had a lot of fun and will definitely go again. Thank you to everyone for taking us and organising it.
