We all arrived on a very cold Friday evening and unpacked our bags. The cubs who had been away before helped the cubs who were staying overnight for the first time. When we were ready we had a very loud Grand Howl and the fun started! We all wrapped up in warm clothes and headed outside for a Treasure Hunt and wide games in the dark followed by Akela's hot chocolate (with the secret ingredient) and cake. After that we started growing our crystal snowflakes and then went off to bed.
Saturday morning was even colder and very, very frosty so we had a massive breakfast of cereal, sausages, bacon, beans, eggy bread ............I can't remember the rest! Then it was back on with the coats, hats and gloves and off outside for activities. The morning was spent surveying the woodland, learning how to use axes and saws safely and having a go at air rifle shooting. We stopped at lunchtime for hot soup and sandwiches and more cake! After lunch we took it in turns to do tracking and to make bottle rockets, followed by an It's a Knockout Competition.
Back inside for dinner then we all made lanterns to take to the campfire. Swampy and Joe did a brilliant campfire with help from Ross, Mim and Jamie. We sang some old favourites and learnt some new songs, then had more of Akela's 'Special' hot chocolate.
Sunday morning dawned cold and extremely frosty again, so after another enormous breakfast we put our warm clothes back on an headed outside for a Mass Rocket Launch - NASA would have been very impressed with the distances some of them flew! We played some more games then it was time to come in and get our uniforms on for the closing ceremony. Over the weekend all the cubs did very well and earned their Scientist and Navigator Badges. Have a look at the Photo Album
At the end of the weekend the cubs were all asked to write or draw what they had enjoyed doing the most and what they had found the most difficult. Here are some of their comments
I liked the food and the activities. My favourite activity was rifle shooting and the bonfire. I liked that there was 3 girls in 1 room.
I liked the game where you have to sneak up on Swampy. It was really fun but he kept pointing the torch at me so I had to go back to Barry
I enjoyed making the lanterns. It was hard but I liked it because I like electronic things
I enjoyed the tracking because it we had to track something but the other team leaded us into a Gone Home sign so we done the same. I also enjoyed the cake and drinks
The hardest thing I did was sleeping. The best thing I did was shooting and assault course.
I think getting to sleep was hard because I am used to the light on. I think the tracking was the best thing because I like making signs
I enjoyed eating all the food and cake and hot chocolate.
The things I liked the best about cubs mad scientist weekend was the air rifle shooting because I scored twenty two points and two balloons. The next best thing was making rockets and blasting them. The things I disliked this weekend was really nothing.
