We woke up on the morning of the Activity Day to a couple of inches of snow - a quick check on the met office website cheered us up - sunshine by 2pm! We headed down to HQ and loaded up the cars and trailer and headed up to Wymondley Wood which looked fantastic under a layer of white. The priority was to get the cook tent up and the urn on so we could all have hot drinks while we got the rest of the site ready.
The fun started at 2pm and for the afternoon Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and their friends and families from most of the District's groups were able to have a go at things that usually only the young people get to do.There was archery, shooting, kite making (and flying), amateur radios, 'It's a Knockout', a scavenger hunt and a campfire. The cubs had made cakes to sell in the refreshment tent and the scouts helped man the tent, as well as running teas, coffees and hot dogs to all the adults running the bases (including Chris down at the road entrance - although I understand it was cold by the time they got there!) They all helped in different ways as part of their International Friendship Partnership Award. We had sunshine, snow, hail and wind (good for Kites!) the only thing we didn't get was rain. Everyone had a great time.
Congratulations to Richard, Stan, Ciaran and William for getting the best time in 'It's a Knockout' and to Lewis H and his family and Lewis R and Joe for joint first in the scavenger hunt.
A big thank you to the members of the Fellowship who came and gave us a hand with the refreshments, the car parking, and on most of the activites at some point in time. Also to Fred and Dave who, as well as helping were also commandeered as 'a Grandad' (an item on the scavenger hunt). Thanks also to Wymondley Wood and the District for their help and to the leaders from other groups who came and gave their time.
Thanks to the superb effort from everyone, we have managed to raise £440. All the money raised is going to the charity run by the GSL from Baden Powell Memorial Group in Nairobi http://www.raysofgoodhope.org/index.html
The District Scout's shooting competition took place today at Wrayfields Farm in Stotfold. Fourteen teams took part from the District scout troops. Lewis, Casey, Jamie and Matthew represented 8th Letchworth and scored a fantastic 133 points out of a possible 200. This puts them in first place and they have won the trophy for 2008. Well Done to all of you.
